This story is about two Latino men, Hercules and Socrates. Hercules was the strongest man in the village and Socrates was the most intelligent man in the village. The two men spent all of their time fighting over who was more important to the village. One day an old man decides on a way for them to finally figure out who is numero uno! They will both leave the village for three days and whoever the village misses the most is the winner. Hercules and Socrates begin their three day travel and argue the whole time. They continue to try and show of their special talent. When they return to the village they find that they villagers missed them both. They needed someone strong for certain tasks and someone inelegant for certain tasks. They realize that both of their talents are special and that no one in the town missed their arguing. This book incorporates a ton of Spanish words and phrases into the book.
Soy fuerte – I’m strong
Soy inteligente – I’m intelligent
Numero uno – number one
Si – yes
Tengo una idea – I have an idea
The illustrations were made using oil paints and graphite on Strathmore 400 drawing paper. The illustrations are really beautiful land realistic. There are a lot of elements of nature. The houses, clothes, and objects are all very brightly colored just like in true Latino culture. The pictures take up two full pages each and there is no room for any white space. The text is very informal and is placed inside of the illustrations.
I would use this book in any elementary classroom. It would be a great book to read and discus Latino culture. The teacher can talk about the pictures, language, and characters. This book would also be perfect for talking about context clues. The students use the clues to figure out what each Spanish word means. They could get practice figuring out words they don’t recognize.
